Each year, International Car Free Day is celebrated in more than 1,500 cities around the world. The Parking and Sustainable Transportation Office has organized once again a wide variety of activities to promote sustainable transportation and a cleaner environment, all the while making the University of Ottawa community aware of the effects of our dependency on cars.

Through the day, there was music, a free bicycle repair workshop, an information fair, electric bike demonstrations, a farmers’ market, a free store, games and a FREE barbecue sponsored by the Office of Risk Management.

During this event you were also able to donate your old mountain bike to “Bicycles for Humanity”.

  • this is unbelievable .... i have never seen anything like this before ....

Heard nothing but great things about this event and its cause
  • It's a nice idea to have such celebration as this one (car free day) not only because it could show awareness in the environment (and also in the cars itself) but also because it's a great way to make us commuters aware about the effects o our dependency in cars...

  • that's a great idea..I'm try to keep my driving to a minimum and I really feel that this would be a perfect fit for my city of Los Angeles...too many drivers in Southern California...even if they are Toyota Prius's, around Southern California is way over-driven.
  • It is a great idea
  • Car Free Day is a great idea, we should try that in Seattle!! Plus, I love the use of the ape hangar type handlebars on the bike in the picture :P
  • Picture says more than the words. That was a nice pic. I surely do think that there is a need to reduce the pollution caused by cars and other means of transport. Bio fuel is what the need of the hour
  • Is there any Turkish city in this 1500 cities?

    thank you.
  • Very cool. Except that I'm from Ottawa and I didn't here anything about this :/

It's nice to have such celebration... not seeing any cars around the campus. But then for us commuters who are really used to have our cars around, it's hard not to have one...
  • I don't know what I would do without a car - pains me to think about it. Days like this help you realize how important they are though!
  • Great piece of work man
    Really a great idea
    keep it up
  • What a great idea - even though we can't really argue with most people's strong dependency on cars. I do think that people should be more conscious of driving - using hybrid cars if you can afford to purchase one, combining trips, cutting down your commuting time by moving closer. But living without a car, unless you're in a big city, just isn't very practical.
