University of Ottawa Car Free Day

By Frederick Carle on September 27th, 2008

Each year, International Car Free Day is celebrated in more than 1,500 cities around the world. The Parking and Sustainable Transportation Office has organized once again a wide variety of activities to promote sustainable transportation and a cleaner environment, all the while making the University of Ottawa community aware of the effects of our dependency on cars.

Through the day, there was music, a free bicycle repair workshop, an information fair, electric bike demonstrations, a farmers’ market, a free store, games and a FREE barbecue sponsored by the Office of Risk Management.

During this event you were also able to donate your old mountain bike to “Bicycles for Humanity”.

What a great idea – even though we can't really argue with most people's strong dependency on cars. I do think that people should be more conscious of driving – using hybrid cars if you can afford to purchase one, combining trips, cutting down your commuting time by moving closer. But living without a car, unless you're in a big city, just isn't very practical.

I don't know what I would do without a car – pains me to think about it. Days like this help you realize how important they are though!

It's nice to have such celebration… not seeing any cars around the campus. But then for us commuters who are really used to have our cars around, it's hard not to have one…

Picture says more than the words. That was a nice pic. I surely do think that there is a need to reduce the pollution caused by cars and other means of transport. Bio fuel is what the need of the hour

Now days we all are very much depended on our cars. We all have our excuses to use it instead of walking or using some other alternatives. IMO, it's a good idea to spread the awareness at universities and colleges. It's very important to protect our envirement so our kids can enjoy it.

that's a great idea..I'm try to keep my driving to a minimum and I really feel that this would be a perfect fit for my city of Los Angeles…too many drivers in Southern California…even if they are Toyota Prius's, around Southern California is way over-driven.

    Speaking of Ottawa:

The people of Ottawa would condemn George W. Bush’s hate crimes.

George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog).

George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes.

And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention.

Many people know what Bush did.

And many people will know what Bush did—even to the end of the world.

    Bush was absolute evil.

Bush is now like a fugitive from justice.

    Bush is a psychological prisoner.

Bush has a lot to worry about.

Bush can technically be prosecuted for hate crimes at any time.

In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

(I can type 90 words per minute. In only 7 days, posts basically like this post of mine have come into existence—all over the Internet (hundreds of copies). One can go to Google USA right now, type “George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism,” hit “Enter,” and find more than 350 copies indicating the content of this post. All in all, there are probably more than 1,000 copies on the Internet indicating the content of this post—it has practically become headline news. One cannot be too dedicated when it comes to anti-Bush activities. As I looked back at my good computer work, I thought how fun and easy it was to do it.)

I am not sure where I had read it before, but anyway, it goes kind of like this: “If only it were possible to ban invention that bottled up memories so they never got stale and faded.” Oh wait—off the top of my head—I think it came from my Lower Merion High School yearbook.

It's a nice idea to have such celebration as this one (car free day) not only because it could show awareness in the environment (and also in the cars itself) but also because it's a great way to make us commuters aware about the effects o our dependency in cars…
