Wish I had known about it so I could participate. I think the need to reduce energy consumption is extremely important. Additionally, being self-reliant with your energy (solar, wind, etc.) is another step towards reducing one's carbon footprint.

Hey Brian,
I meant digging as in www.digg.com. :) And, have you checked out www.hugg.com? Your story is currently featured in the hottest huggs section.

I heard this great quote tonight by the late Randy Pausch (The Last Lecture prof-have you watched in on YouTube? So inspiring). He said, "Don't tell people how to live their lives. Just tell them stories." This is why I love your post so much. I love these kinds of stories.

You made my day! What a cool story. And I was so excited to hear that your teenage stepson got involved. Remember our little chat a while ago about the teens likely being less than enthused about taking part in this ritual (and possibly our spouses)? Well, my 16 year old stepson is here for the summer and tonight was his first "Monthly Earth Hour" with us. At first he was kind of like okay, I'll do it. Then when he realized it wasn't THE earth hour that comes once a year, but rather something I'm trying to encourage other families to consider, he began his protest and called me crazy. So, guess what I did? I bribed him with fame. I told him I'd write his name on this blog for all the world to see. He even agreed to let me turn off the power bar on his video game console (which I couldn't figure out). While my young kids and I turned off all the power and fans (we never do the oven or the fridge either) and brought puzzles out into the front yard, TREVOR AIDAN PEACOCK broke the bicycle helmet out of its plastic and went for his first summer ride.

I can't wait to hear about your family earth hour next month, Brian! Stories like these are the ones that truly inspire.
