Today on the Discovery Channel, Daily Planet presented a eco-friendly race car. It can go 240 km/h on cashews and sugar beet and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.
Eco One is 95 percent biodegradable or recyclable and all of the plastic components are made of plants, while the structural frame is made from steel, an easily reusable material.
The tires are made of potatoes and the brake pads from ground cashew shells. The body was created using hemp and rapeseed oil and it runs on fuel made from fermented wheat and sugar beet.
The one-seater racing car was designed by Dr. Kerry Kirwan, a researcher at the Warwick Manufacturing Group and built by student Ben King. Using an engine from a Triumph Daytona motorbike, the machine took two months to build and cost roughly $43,000 CDN.
After 2 years of going across the world to show the product, the car broke down while filming for Daily Planet. It was a drive shaft that shattered. The team says they are already planing to build a new car that would be 97% recyclable.
