Want to know why that product is Green?

Apparently owning a big boat and being eco-friendly at the same time are now possible. Making it’s debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the DSe Hybrid 12m from Island Pilot is powered using a combination of diesel, solar, electric power and when the production model comes out it will also have wind turbines to top everything.

Using only solar power the boat can cruise at speeds of six knots with absolutely no emissions which is great for a Sunday afternoon in the sun. On the other side if you need to get somewhere in a hurry you can always switch to diesel and get it gliding at 13 knots. Without the diesel engine running, this sea marvel is almost silent.

The bad side is the $600,000 price tag that comes with it. If your a true greenie and you have the money, Island Pilot is taking pre-orders for a 2009 delivery but be prepared to lay down another $5,000 just to reserve one.

  • I hope one day we will all be green. This is a great step! I think that 'Green" awareness is rising. Hopefully soon we will all be driving cars that run on algae :)
  • Technology is advancing so fast, and it's only a matter of time before really big cruise lines catch onto this and hopefully make those huge 21tonne cruise ships also eco-friendly...even just half as efficient as this one is all I ask
  • pretty cool invention, it will surely save lts of energy consumption coz it is solar nice idea, the design is so cute
  • That is a very cool boat - I'm glad to see they're working on it, but as greenerguy pointed out, sailboats are still probably the greenest.
  • Brian
Wow! I'd love one of these. Great post.
  • Maybe one day I will be able to afford this big energy efficient boat. For now I can look at it and be very impressed. I think it is very pretty and I hope that those who can afford it will buy it to continue to encourage boat manufacturers to build green boats.

Thank you for the great post!
  • I suppose a sail boat would also get you the same green benefits as the solar panels.
