GREEN DEETS 016: Ben Harper 01 from George Spyros on Vimeo.

This is the first episode of a four-part series by TreeHugger. It shows singer Ben Harper in conversation with TreeHugger founder Graham Hill.

The Pearl Street Triangle, which could accommodate about two dozen cars, was transformed due to an idea of a group of Pratt Institute graduate students.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030 plan for environmental sustainability calls for adding 800 acres of new public space by 2030.

This was the first of about 31 plaza projects to be completed by 2009.

The Dumbo Improvement District contributed $25,000 to the project, and the city $20,000.

Students at Bret Harte Elementary school in San Francisco’s Bayview/Hunter’s Point neighborhood recently got their hands a little dirty turning sections of their schoolyard into a small scale fruit orchard.

The school was a stop on the Common Vision Fruit Tree Tour, which has been making yearly trips the length of California putting on environmental education events at elementary schools. A group of 25+ volunteers walk school groups through their own fruit tree planting and involve them in a day’s worth of environment themed activities including West African drumming, theatre and hip-hop poetry.

“We looked around and saw this obvious need, ‘one’ for localized food systems and ‘two’ to just be a spark for kids to really start to look around and see that solution focusing is possible and that it’s possible to better the communities around their schools,” said Leo Buc, a volunteer educator with the group describing the group’s mission. The Common Vision organization travels in converted buses that run on pure vegetable oil recycled from restaurants along the journey.

After being ranked 13th most powerful blog by British newspaper The Guardian TreeHugger is now number 4 in Time Magazine’s Top Five Best Blogs. Time magazine say’s that TreeHugger is the most complete of the hundreds of grassroots green blogs. It ranks among the top 20 blogs in traffic worldwide. I fully support this opinion. Once again I personally congratulate TreeHugger for giving the world a clearer view – and probably the best – of our environment.

Ready to go for some green cooking. Well this video will show you just what you can do to reduce your impact on the environment and on your budget. Yes on your budget. Why, because meat is really expensive and there are alternatives eating meat. Something like tofu could be a great alternative. What is most impressive is that when you turn your steak stir fry into a tofu stir fry, you can save more than 15 dollars.

Chef Dana McCauley shares green cooking tips and tricks with CBC News in this interview. (5:00)(Larry Crowe/Associated Press)

Earth Hour

In Toronto last night he local electrical utility reported an 8.7% drop in consumption during Earth Hour. This is really good. Toronto came close to 10.2% reduction set by Sydney Australia last year being the pioneer of this event. It’s nice to hear that Canadian try to make a difference in reducing global emissions.

 TheStar.com
Toronto hit its energy reduction target during Earth Hour last night, as tens of thousands of residents and businesses combined fun with a clear statement of concern about climate change.

The city, while not plunged into total darkness, took on an aura of magic and mystery as, one by one, lights blinked out and pedestrians gawked at normally brilliant towers transformed into eerie shadows.

Just before 9 o’clock, the meter at the Toronto Hydro control centre hit a low of 2,738 megawatts – 5 per cent below the demand an hour earlier and about 8.7 per cent less than the average for the past three years
