Each week millions upon millions of exuberant human beings head out of their houses and into nightclubs to expend large amounts of energy on the dancefloor. Whilst it may not be the pastime of everyone there’s no denying this a powerful resource. Could it really be possible to harness this energy and help save the planet? One person believes so and on Thursday 10th July in King’s Cross, Dr.Earth challenged club promoters the world over to embrace a greener future.

Club4Climate, the parent company owned by Andrew Charalambos launched Surya in King’s Cross, London as the UK’s first ecological club to create a green print for others to follow. Surya itself goes beyond the concept of sustainability and into the realm of ecology. It generates surplus energy and recognizes the need to engender a ‘gentle revolution’ which can include millions and not the few (as can be seen in this ten point manifesto outlined by Dr. Earth which can be easily adopted by bars, clubs and pubs all over the world).

Surya is only the second ecological club on the planet, a flagship venture and a pioneer of ecological excellence. The club has an energy, self-generating dancefloor which by combining materials such as quartz crystals, ceramics, cutting edge technology and the dancing motion of clubbers generates enough energy to power up to 50% of the clubs energy requirements. A wind turbine and a solar energy system makes the club 100% fully sustainable. Its advanced alternative energy system is so effective that it will produce a surplus of electricity which is freely donated to the private residents closest to the building. The club has also installed the latest air flush, waterless urinals and low flush toilets, as well as automatic taps to ensure maximum water saving. Even the air conditioning units are ecological.

There is no greater universal language that unites people than music and no greater convergence of the diversity of peoples which populate our planet than the international clubbing circuit. Working against climate change is not only duty but can be serious fun and club4climate and Surya provide a platform to dance towards a greener future.

The Parking and Sustainable Transportation Office has organized once again a wide variety of activities to promote sustainable transportation and a cleaner environment, all the while making the University of Ottawa community aware of the effects of our dependency on cars.

Through the day, there was music, a free bicycle repair workshop, an information fair, electric bike demonstrations, a farmers’ market, a free store, games and a FREE barbecue sponsored by the Office of Risk Management.

During this event you were also able to donate your old mountain bike to “Bicycles for Humanity”.

What we really liked here at talkgreen was the eco-friendly side of some artists and more precisely Paramore and T-Pain who came to the party in Smarts unlike Tokio Hotel who got there in a monster truck.

I’m coming to the VMAs. Everybody is doing the same thing, Pain explained. I need to get my differ-rench-ee-ality on. I got to make sure I come correct. Correct!

The Osisko Festival held in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada this weekend was a great success with its best attendance ever. Featuring one of the 70’s biggest band “CCR” and Canadian Pop Rock Artist David Usher the crowd was going crazy.

We recently wrote about the Ottawa Bluesfest going green and I’m very happy to once again be able to talk to you about another green festival. Ok this festival may not be as big as the Ottawa Bluesfest but the organizers of these events sure are doing a great job at keeping an environmentally friendly aspect. Every few meters on the site you could find a container separating cans and bottles, recyclables and garbage. Also, volunteers were doing a very good job at keeping these containers usable by regularly emptying them.

These photos show volunteers sorting out the empty cans and loading them into the Pepsi truck.

Keep up the good work Osisko!

“uses 100 percent organic hops and 100 percent organic barley malt, certified by the United States Department of Agriculture and the independent organic organization, Quality Assurance International (QAI).
According to their website (http://www.stonemillpaleale.com), they recycle over 97% of all solid waste associated with making their beer. Anheuser-Busch is not the only company jumping on the organic bandwagon, the MillerCoors Company has also developed their own organic beer. Henry Weinhard’s Organic Amber Premium Ale is certified 95% organic, and is USDA certified.

That being said, it is important to keep in mind the fossil-fuel consumption and gas emissions related to the major brewing companies shipping these brands. That is why it is suggested that eco-friendly beer drinkers stick to local microbreweries as much as possible.

On June 4th, Billabong hosted their 2nd Design for Humanity charity event. The first event was an opportunity for Billabong to give back to a non-profit close to the heart of their industry.

This year Design for Humanity will donate to the Surfrider Foundation. Retailers, celebrities, artists, and the general public had the opportunity to make a difference in this event. This one night of celebrating is animated by a bikini fashion show, a live band and art exposition.

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide.

The core activities and campaigns that the Surfrider Foundation uses to protect our oceans, waves and beaches fall into the categories of Clean Water, Beach Access, Beach Preservation and Protecting Special Places.

I am very happy to see that the Ottawa Bluesfest is concerned about the environment. When walking on the site to go to the Three Days Grace concert there were green t-shirts all over the place making sure that garbage was picked up and that recycling bags were changed regularly to ensure people would recycle.

I use Biodiesel in my tour buses and trucks, and I’m so excited to be playing a festival that’s gone green! said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Bonnie Raitt, who headlined on the Bluesfest Main Stage in 2006.

What you see below is a PlascoEnergy green garbage can. The company and the City of Ottawa built a facility that will process up to 85 tonnes per day of unsorted municipal solid waste and generate electricity to power the entire process and approximately 3600 Ottawa households. These cans were everywhere on the Bluesfest site.

In response to the positive feedback from the public for greening efforts over the past few years, Bluesfest organizers have decided to continue working with sponsors—specifically Molson Canada and Rothsay Biodiesel—to maintain specific initiatives for 2008.

I especially liked the plastic bottles and aluminum cans receptacle known as the ClearStream CycleMax that you see below. Field studies have proven that the ClearStream is extremely successful in the recovery of recyclable materials and greatly reduces the amount of litter sent to landfill sites. The transparency of the bag shows the public what they accomplish so they can appreciate the direct result of their participation in local recycling efforts.
