I found out that my neighbours actually took the CD cases before the recycling truck came. They had a friend who just got married and she needed them for the DVDs she was mailing out to guests. I felt bad that she had to put many of the cases back together that I had separated when removing the papers, but I love when things get reused before recycling. Hmm. Maybe just inspired my own plastic pledge for this month's earth hour...

If you need to get rid of cases, consider contacting a professional photographer to see if he/she might want your old cases.

Wow -- reducing plastic use is a tough assignment. Like everyone, we try to recycle everything, and our curbside recycle bin is consistently more full than the trash. Still, as I cart it out for pickup every Friday, I know that recycling is inefficient and we should try to reduce our consumption.

One thing we do terribly at is cans and bottles. We use a LOT of them, especially with the 14-year-old in the house. I've got to work on that.

Thanks for the info, tips, and link Melody! Very interesting. I was just thinking today about how my mother used to buy paper bags for lunch every day (they came in plastic no doubt). Inside we had about three plastic baggies full of snacks with twist ties that we used to chuck out with the paper bag and drink container every day. (X3 since I have 2 brothers) Frightening how much waste used to go out with kids to school. My daughter will be starting kindergarten this year, so any tips such as Melody's are welcome parents. Thanks again!

Great article. You make a great point about not needing all of this plastic. Just to add, there is a huge natural dump created by currents in the Pacific Ocean that is 30 metres deep and twice the size of Vancouver Island that has plastics swirling around waiting for sea creatures to consume and then die from eating them.

If you are looking for a few ways to reduce your consumption when you get the kids back to school, try a reusable sandwich wrap instead of disposable bags and water bottles instead of juice boxes. Here is an example of a reusable sandwich wrap. http://ethicalconsumer.ca/blog/2008/08/15/back-to-school-buys-top-of-the-class/

Again, great article and I look forward to reading more.

Sounds like to me. Doing this could be fun and challenging. We could try in every possible manner to get rid of all the plastic items and replace that with eco-friendly materials. I don’t mind paying little extra.
